I’d go with binoculars. Portable and more useful.

My least expensive telescope is an Orion "Short Tube 80" which cost about $200. I used my existing tripod. I don’t know of any new good telescope for $100.

You want a reasonable aperture (say 80 mm or larger), and standard focuser that can accept standard 1-1/4 inch diameter eyepieces. Almost any kind of mount or tripod will almost add $100.

There are a couple really cool scopes that might come close — Edmund Scientific’s Astroscan is one, and Orion has a similar scope. Both of these sit on a tabletop — hopefully a stable one.

There isn’t one. Anything under $300 is junk!
    How about $100 binoculars?

If you can scrape together $100, it is REALLY worth your while to scrape together another $100. A $100 telescope is, at best, a negligible improvement over the Mk I Eyeball, except perhaps for viewing details on the moon. In most other cases, it’ll be more nuisance than useful.

If you can scrape together $229, you can get something like this: http://www.telescope.com/control/telescopes/dobsonian-telescopes/orion-skyquest-xt4*5-classic-dobsonian-telescope

Where you have enough focal length and aperture diameter to get a notable improvement over naked eye viewing, or any $100 scope.

Either that, or just buy a pair of binoculars, like Nyx said. In that price range, the ease of use and portability gives them more utility than any telescope available, and the optics will likely be reasonably comparable.

well, it’s about how "good" you need it to be,,,it’s a tight budget, even a bit low for a good astro-binoculars, but in average you can pick a good "beginner" scope under $100 if you searched carefully… checkout those links:
